PITTSBURGH — Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Legal Counsel Matt Bowman will be available for media interviews following a hearing Wednesday in which he will argue against the Obama administration’s attempt to dismiss a lawsuit against the president’s abortion pill mandate.
Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys represent Geneva College, a Presbyterian college in Beaver Falls, and the Seneca Hardwood Lumber Co., a family-owned business in Cranberry, both of whom object to the mandate.
“Americans have the God-given freedom to live and do business according to their faith,” said Bowman. “The government shouldn’t punish people of faith for making decisions in accordance with it, and yet that’s what the Obama administration is trying to do here in Pennsylvania and throughout the country. The fact the administration is attempting to have this and other lawsuits dismissed demonstrates that Vice President Biden’s recent claim that no religious group will be forced to abide by the mandate is, to use his word, malarkey.”
The mandate forces employers, regardless of their religious or moral convictions, to provide insurance coverage for abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and contraception under threat of heavy penalties. Seneca Hardwood Lumber Co. and its owners, the Hepler family, object to funding coverage for any of these items and services, while Geneva College specifically objects to funding coverage for abortifacients.
On July 27, Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys obtained the first-ever court order against the Obama administration’s mandate on behalf of Colorado-based Hercules Industries and the Catholic family that owns it. That order temporarily suspends the mandate against Hercules Industries while its lawsuit goes forward in court.
Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys are also litigating four other lawsuits against the mandate: one on behalf of Indiana-based Grote Industries; one on behalf of Illinois-based Tyndale House Publishers; one on behalf of Indiana’s Grace College and Seminary and California’s Biola University; and one on behalf of Louisiana College. The lawsuits represent a large cross-section of Protestants and Catholics who object to the mandate.
