BRIGHTON, Colo. — Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Michael J. Norton will be available for media interviews Monday following oral argument at the Adams County District Court regarding the state’s voter-approved constitutional amendment affirming marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

ADF attorneys represent 20 elected Colorado legislators, including state Reps. Bob Gardner and Kathleen Conti and state Sens. Ted Harvey and George A. Rivera, whom the district court has allowed to intervene in defense of Colorado’s current marriage laws.

“Marriage expresses the reality that men and women bring distinct, irreplaceable gifts to family life, especially for children who deserve both a mom and a dad. Colorado’s laws have always rightly reflected the true and complementary nature of marriage,” said Norton. “A substantial majority of Colorado’s voters approved an amendment to Colorado’s Constitution that affirms that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. The court should honor the people’s decision.”

As ADF’s brief filed with the court explains, “Marriage is thus inextricably linked to the undeniable biological fact that man-woman couples, and only man-woman couples, are capable of naturally creating new life together and, therefore, are capable of furthering, or threatening, society’s interests in responsibly creating and rearing the next generation.”
