NEW ORLEANS — Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Steven H. Aden will be available to media immediately following oral arguments Monday at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit in a lawsuit over a Mississippi law designed to protect women from “cut and run” abortionists. The law, being defended by the state’s attorney general, requires abortionists to have admitting privileges at a local hospital where women can be treated if complications from an abortion arise.
At issue is a federal district judge’s preliminary injunction order that prohibits the law from taking effect while the lawsuit against it moves forward. The Mississippi attorney general’s office is asking the 5th Circuit to reverse that order.
“Women deserve real doctors, not transient abortionists who have no connection to their patients or their communities. The health and safety of women is more important than an abortionist’s bottom line,” said Aden. “The fact that abortionists are opposing these common-sense health requirements demonstrates that they care more about profiting from abortions than about women’s health and safety.”
The lawsuit, Jackson Women’s Health Organization v. Currier, attacks Mississippi House Bill 1390, signed into law by Gov. Phil Bryant on April 16, 2012. The measure requires abortionists associated with licensed abortion facilities to possess admitting privileges, which allow the abortionists to follow up with patients in a local hospital if complications occur after an abortion.
“People may hold different views about abortion, but everyone can agree that Mississippi should put the safety and health of women first,” added Aden. “We hope the 5th Circuit will allow this law to go into effect so that women’s lives will not play second fiddle to the profit margin of abortionists.”
