ADF attorneys to hold press conference on California Supreme Court decision in Lewis v. Alfaro

Thursday, Aug 12, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO — Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund will be available to the media for comment on the California Supreme Court decision in the case of Lewis v. Alfaro. ADF Senior Counsel Jordan Lorence, who argued before the California Supreme court in the case, will issue a statement and hold a press conference on the steps of the courthouse building at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

According to ADF Chief Counsel Benjamin Bull, Lewis v. Alfaro is a critical case for the rule of law in California and the nation. "The question in this case is whether elected public officials have to uphold and enforce the law as written or whether they can apply the law according to their own personal whims," he said. "If it’s the latter, our uniform system of laws would be reduced to a patchwork of disparate rights and obligations based upon the beliefs of local officials."

The California Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Lewis v. Alfaro May 25. "As Justice Marvin R. Baxter said, it’s the city that got us into this mess. As another justice said, if there’s any detrimental reliance on these licenses, the couples have only the city to blame and no one else," Bull said.
