WV Christian schools, families urge state's high court to uphold vital scholarship program

Thursday, Sep 22, 2022

The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel and Vice President of Appellate Advocacy John Bursch regarding a friend-of-the-court brief ADF attorneys, as co-counsel, filed Thursday with the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia in State of West Virginia v. Beaver on behalf of the West Virginia Christian Education Association in support of the Hope Scholarship program, which thousands of families rely on to send their children to schools aligned with their values, after a lower court wrongly halted the program from going into effect:

“Thousands of West Virginia families, including those from impoverished areas, rely on Hope Scholarships to send their children to good schools that align with their values. The circuit court’s unlawful move to prevent this program from going into effect has posed significant hardships to West Virginia Christian Education Association schools, other Christian schools across the state, and low-income families, forcing them to make difficult and unnecessary decisions. We urge West Virginia’s high court to right this wrong and allow the Hope Scholarship program to be fully implemented as soon as possible.”

Zachary Viglianco, Gordon Mowen, and Ryan Nash with law firm Orndorff Mowen PLLC are serving as lead counsel in the case on behalf of the West Virginia Christian Education Association, and are part of the ADF Attorney Network.
