The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Matt Sharp, vice president of public policy, regarding South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster’s signing Tuesday of H. 5538, the Guarantee Banking Act. The law prohibits large financial institutions with more than $100 billion in assets from canceling accounts or denying financial services because of a person’s constitutionally protected political or religious views, speech, or affiliations:
“No one should be denied access to basic financial services based on their political or religious beliefs. But when big banks weaponize their control of financial services to punish those with disfavored or unpopular views, they are just as threatening to freedom as Big Brother. By enacting this bill, South Carolina joins Tennessee and Idaho in leading the charge to protect citizens, non-profits, religious organizations, and businesses from discriminatory debanking. We commend Gov. McMaster for signing this bill and Senate President Thomas Alexander, House Speaker Murrell Smith, Speaker Pro Temp Tommy Pope, and Rep. Craig Gagnon for introducing this critical legislation.”
