Minn. African-Americans make case against unauthorized abortion spending on appeal

Friday, Sep 13, 2013
The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Jordan Lorence regarding the opening brief filed Thursday with the Minnesota Court of Appeals on behalf of two African-American taxpayers in Minnesota who are challenging the unauthorized use of state funding for elective abortions in the case Walker v. Jesson:

“Minnesota taxpayers should not be forced to pay for medically unnecessary abortions, especially when state law has not authorized it. The Minnesota Supreme Court’s 1995 decision that expanded abortion funding nonetheless made clear that its decision ‘will not permit any woman eligible for medical assistance to obtain an abortion “on demand,”’ yet the government’s own statistics prove this is precisely what is happening. Additionally, taxpayer-funded abortions disproportionally and tragically fall on the African-American community. We are simply asking the Court of Appeals to require the state to spend the people’s tax dollars in a manner consistent with the law.”
