1st Circuit allows Louisiana to direct Medicaid funding away from abortion providers

The following quote may be attributed to Louisiana Attorney General Elizabeth Murrill regarding the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit’s decision Thursday in Planned Parenthood v. Kennedy to halt the district court injunction in favor of Planned Parenthood’s challenge to the provision of the One Big Beautiful Bill that redirects Medicaid funding—intended to help low-income patients obtain necessary medical assistance—away from abortion providers for one year. Louisiana, along with Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys, filed a friend-of-the-court brief last week with the court urging it to protect taxpayers from funding Planned Parenthood:

“Louisiana will always choose the health and safety of women and babies over the abortion industry’s bottom line. Americans’ hard-earned money should support health care providers offering real, compassionate health care—not organizations with a callous disregard for life. Yet Planned Parenthood continues to demand millions of taxpayer dollars. We’re grateful the 1st Circuit halted the abortion giant’s scheme and affirmed Louisiana’s ability to decide who qualifies for Medicaid funding and to put our citizens’ lives first.”

The following quote may be attributed to ADF Senior Counsel Lincoln Wilson:

“Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the ability of states to decide to fund real, comprehensive care and exclude organizations like Planned Parenthood that profit off abortion. And through the One Big Beautiful Bill, the American people have made clear once again that they don’t want their tax dollars propping up the abortion industry. We’re pleased that the 1st Circuit has allowed this law to be enforced and prevented interference with states’ critical role in the Medicaid system.”
