IA governor signs crucial religious freedom bill

Wednesday, Apr 3, 2024

The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Legal Counsel Greg Chafuen regarding Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’s signing Tuesday of SF 2095, a bill that ensures that Iowans are free to live and work according to their faith without fear of unjust government punishment:

“Americans should be able to defend their rights when their government stops them from living and worshiping according to their faith. This law provides a sensible balancing test for courts to use when reviewing government policies that infringe upon the religious freedom rights of Iowans. The law doesn’t determine who will win every disagreement, but it does ensure that every Iowan—regardless of their religious creed or political power—receives a fair hearing when government action forces a person to violate his or her religious beliefs. We commend the Iowa Legislature and Gov. Reynolds for enacting this important legislation and setting the stage to ensure that freedom of religion is protected for everyone. Iowa joins 27 other states in guaranteeing that Iowans of all faith can seek relief from oppressive state action.”
